Die Investigativjournalistin Daphne Caruana Galizia aus Malta war bekannt für Ihre unerschrockene Berichterstattung und ihren Einsatz gegen Intransparenz und Korruption. Am 16. Oktober 2017 wurde sie brutal mit einer Autobombe ermordet – offensichtlich ein Vergeltungsschlag gegen ihre Arbeit im Dienst der Allgemeinheit.

Fast zwei Jahre später fehlt von den Drahtziehern des Attentats noch immer jede Spur und Malta fällt auf der Rangliste der Pressefreiheit immer weiter zurück. Wie sind solche Zustände in einem EU-Land möglich? Was führte zu Daphne Caruana Galizias Ermordung und warum stocken die Ermittlungen?

Investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia was known for her fearless coverage of power in her home country of Malta. On Oct. 16, 2017, she was murdered in a car bombing in apparent retaliation for her work.

Nearly two years later, Malta has made virtually no progress in finding the mastermind behind the killing. Instead, press freedom in the EU’s smallest member state continues to worsen. How is such a situation possible in the EU?
