In the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic and serious economic challenges for most media outlets in Europe, Italy will have a new center-left newspaper: Domani.

One week before the official launch, on 15 September 2020, Stefano Feltri, Domani’s director, will dialogue with journalists and media experts about this innovative business model, information layout, and content approach. Domani started as an online outlet and starting 15 September it will be sold in kiosks.

Financed by the industrialist Carlo de Benedetti, the former owner of La Repubblica, Domani promises to be different: fact-based, independent, future-focused, socially, environmentally and gender conscious, emphasising the understanding of different topics, rather  than chasing the latest political quotes. Audience engagement is a priority.

De Benedetti offers the initial capital of 20 million euros, and “it will be the only Italian newspaper owned by a foundation, and one of the few in Europe, including the Guardian, “said De Benedetti in an interview to the Guardian. “The Foundation will secure the absolute independence of the newspaper”, de Benedetti explained in the same interview.

What are the main characteristics of the Italian media landscape? What is unique about Domani? How does it plan to reach new audiences? Who is the target audience? Why now?

The Online-Talk is moderated by Daniela Kraus (Presseclub Concordia) and Mirjana Tomic (fjum).
