Hintergrund
In politischen Diskussionen wird der Begriff “Orbánisierung” bereits weitläufig verwendet, oft jedoch ohne konkrete Definition. FPÖ-Chef Herbert Kickl hat Elemente von Viktor Orbáns Politik vor Kurzem zu seinem Vorbild erklärt. Da aktuellen Meinungsumfragen zufolge die FPÖ bei den nächsten Nationalratswahlen stärkste Partei in Österreich werden könnte, ist es wichtig, die Grundlagen von Viktor Orbáns Regierungsstil zu kennen.

Kim Lane Scheppele ist Professorin für Soziologie und internationale Beziehungen an der Princeton University (USA). Ihre Forschung konzentriert sich auf eine neue Generation von Autokraten, die ihre Macht durch Wahlen erlangt und Gesetzesänderungen konsolidiert haben. Scheppele ist eine international anerkannte Expertin für Ungarn und die Regierung von Viktor Orbán. Derzeit ist sie Fellow am Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen (IWM) in Wien.

Ablauf
Kim Lane Scheppele wird zunächst die Kernelemente der Orbánisierung erläutern. Daraufhin wird Nikolaus Forgó die Unabhängigkeit des österreichischen Justizsystems kommentieren und Daniela Kraus den Stauts quo der österreichischen Medienlandschaft skizzieren. Anschließend wird die Diskussion auf das Publikum ausgeweitet.

Background
The term Orbanisation has entered mainstream conversations but without a proper definition regarding its meaning. Herbert Kickl, leader of Austria’s Freedom Party (FPÖ) , has expressed his wish for Austria to emulate certain policies of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Current opinion polls indicate that Kickl may win the 2024 general elections, and therefore it is important to understand the fundamentals of Viktor Orban’s regime and policies.

Prof. Schepple will explore the basis of Orban’s regime; Prof. Forgó will comment on the independence of Austrian judicial system and Dr Daniela Kraus will examine Austrian media landscape.

Speakers
Kim Lane Scheppele is a Professor of Sociology and International Affairs at Princeton University, US. Her current research focuses on a new generation of autocrats in different countries who consolidated their power through elections and by power of law. Prof. Scheppele is and internationally renowned expert on Hungary and Viktor Orbán’s regime. She is currently fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna (IWM). Full CV
